Tea and Your Health

Many people naturally regard tea as containing numerous healthy properties and we often see or hear stories of research being undertaken in countries such as Japan or China where important correlations between tea drinking and better health, such as lower than average incidences of cancer or stroke have been discovered.

One of the founders of Camellia's Tea House, Lubna Madan, is a qualified homeopath and she has used all her passion and knowledge of medicine and the healing arts to develop a range of Health Promoting teas which seek to tap in to the innate healing properties of tea. So why is tea so good for you? It is well known that fruit and vegetables are good sources of antioxidants however it is less well known that green and black tea contain tea flavonoids which have strong anti oxidant properties i.e. inhibiting damage to cells through oxidation by free radicals, which are well known to protect against conditions such as cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Whilst tea is not a replacement for fruit and vegetables, studies have shown that drinking two to four cups of tea a day has approximately the same antioxidant “potency” as eating 6 apples! As well as contributing to fluid and antioxidant intake, drinking four cups of tea a day can provide certain vitamins and minerals, which are proven to promote health and well being. The most common vitamins and minerals found in tea are Vitamin C, B, E, calcium, zinc, potassium and manganese.

We have quickly summarised the most researched and well known benefits of drinking tea but if you would like more detailed information with full references to some of the research undertaken, please visit the Tea Advisory Panel website, www.teaadvisorypanel.com, which was created to advise the media and provide impartial expertise to the health benefits of drinking tea.

Tea and cardiovascular disease – Current research has shown that tea flavonoids can reduce blood pressure in potential stroke patients, inhibit the formation of bad or LDL cholesterol and can improve the overall health and elasticity of blood vessels.

Tea and bone density – Recent research suggests that drinking four cups of tea day can have a positive effect on bones by increasing bone density. When milk is added to tea, an important source of calcium is added to your diet and in fact, four cups of tea with milk a day provides approximately 21% of an adults daily calcium requirements.

Tea and oral health – The tea plant is a very good natural source of fluoride which helps to strengthen enamel and promote healthy teeth through its anti-plaque qualities.

Tea and caffeine – The urban myth that tea contains as much caffeine as coffee is wrong. Research shows that tea contains about one third to one half of the caffeine of an average cup of filtered coffee and proportionately much less than an espresso.

The healing properties of tea are wide ranging and can be a little bewildering for beginners so we have identified some common ailments and summarised which teas may help with these ailments. Since tea has so many healthy effects on the body, a tea which is good for the digestive system may also be good for slimming or stress so you will see some teas spanning a range of different ailments.

Slimming

Green and oolong tea contain high concentrations of catechin polyphenols. These compounds work with other chemicals to intensify levels of fat oxidation and thermogenesis (the body’s rate of burning fat). If these teas are drunk regularly as part of a healthy diet and exercise regime, it is believed that a person’s metabolic rate will increase which will help burn fat safely and naturally.

It is also believed that green tea regulates the amount of carbohydrates released in to the blood preventing sharp increases in blood-insulin levels. Traditionally the Chinese have drunk Pu erh tea as it is believed to promote healthy weight loss by boosting the metabolism and aiding the body in digesting fatty foods.

Vitality

The urban legend that tea contains as much if not more caffeine than coffee is a myth. Studies have proven that a cup of tea contains about one third of the caffeine in an average cup of filter coffee. The caffeine content in tea has a gentle and uplifting effect on the body compared to coffee where the caffeine “hit” can be intense and cause “jitters”. The uplifting feeling lasts longer than coffee because the caffeine is more slowly released in to the body.

Green tea has been drunk in China for over 5000 years due to its perceived attributes of providing vitality and boosting general health and so we would recommend integrating the drinking of tea and in particular, green teas, as part of a healthy diet.
